STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO THE KASAUG YOUTH MOVEMENT PRESS CONFERENCE
MAMPRUGU YOUTH ASSOCIATION (BAWKU CHAPTER
STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO THE KASAUG YOUTH MOVEMENT PRESS CONFERENCE
22/06/2022
Ladies and gentlemen of the press. Thank you for honoring our invitation at such short notice.
We all woke up to a press conference by a group calling itself kusaug youth movement in which they sought to malign Mamprusis for an alleged case of cattle rustling.
First of all, we wish to advice the good people of Bawku especially all tribes living in the township to remain calm and not be provoked by the Kusasi presser. The presser and its content, especially within the times we find ourselves in, is a calculated attempt at provocation and we must not fall for it.
We wish to draw the attention of the security to the incendiary remarks in the presser maligning a whole tribe and the potential of such to inflame passions. Mamprusis have proved to be law abiding and have always relied on the state and security agencies to act. The case of cattle rustling we believe is being handled by the police and we have every faith in the work of the police service in Bawku.
We distance the tribe from the conduct of those suspected individuals allegedly involved in the act. We like to call on the police in Bawku to ensure the law takes its course. We wish to enjoin everyone in Bawku irrespective of your tribe to desist from any act or action that will bring the name of Bawku into disrepute. Our town has suffered a lot from all the negativity of the needless conflict and we must desist from adding to this negativity by not engaging in any unlawful or shameful act.
The kusasi youth movement were shamelessly mute even when a day after the purported cattle incident, kusasis mobilized and attacked Moshie farmers around Missiga and killed the bulls with which the Moshies farmed. It is interesting how all of a sudden, the kusasis have found a voice in a matter relating to cattle rustling but were as mute as dumb when just two weeks ago, a moshie driver plying the Bawku-Cinkasse route was trailed by kusasi bandits, shot and his body burnt alongside the vehicle he was driving. What was instructive about this incident beyond the heinous crime of murder is the banditry perpetuated on the passengers who were in the vehicle. Their bags were searched and monies taken. This happened near Pusiga and yet the kusasi youth movement never found their voice.
The actions of these kusasi criminals are further emboldened by none other than Stephen Yakubu, the Upper East Regional Minister. As Chairman of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), one would have expected that a swift action is taken to bring the perpetrators to book. But no, he has shown open bias by his actions and inactions and proved to all that, he values cattle belonging to his kusasi kinsmen, more than human life. Not so long about a month ago, kusasi bandits attacked women from the Bawku township who went to trade in Atuba Market. Their goods were vandalized and burnt. The assailants are well known and it happened right at Stephen Yakubu’s backyard in Binduri and he is yet to find his voice on these incidents. His deafening silence and selective action on certain occurrences in Bawku is very telling what his priorities are. As to why President Nana Addo continues to play deaf to the calls for his re-assignment or removal from the region even with the evidence of his open bias leaves much to be desired.
We, the Mamprusis, do not and will not encourage such acts. As a matter of fact, since the establishment of Bawku and chieftaincy in the 1700s and when Bawku flourished as a trade route, we have never engaged in the activity of unlawful seizure of goods belonging to traders plying the trade route let alone goods belonging to Kusasis who benefited so much under our protection. Among all the tribes Mamprusis settled in Bawku and surrounding communities, it is only kusasis who have turned around to lay claim to farmlands belonging to mamprusis. They visit violence on the rightful owners anytime an attempt is made at harnessing farmlands in blatant disregard to pronouncement by the Minyila led government committee set up to look into matters of farmlands.
For our kusasi brothers, especially those who were quick to organize a presser, we encourage them to have faith in the security agencies especially if they have had reason to report such a case. You do not report a case and then turn around to organize a press conference seeking to malign a whole tribe even as investigations is ongoing into the matter.
While we view this purported incident of cattle rustling as purely criminal, the so called Kusaug Youth movement found space to drag the Bawku chieftaincy issue into their presser. The kusasis can repeat the unfortunate and misguided pronouncements of the president on the bawku issue a million times. They can rehash the pronouncement of the minister for interior and that of the chieftaincy minister two million times. The president of the upper east regional house of chiefs, the Chiana Pio who happened to be their special guest of honour at this year’s kusasi cultural festival and who in collusion with the kusasis issued a statement on the bawku conflict purporting it to be the official pronouncement of the upper east regional house of chiefs has joined the chorus. The kusasi youth movement can request a weekly reading of that statement to make them feel good. It does not and will not change the fact that their so-called chief usurped the bawku skin and the day of reckoning is near. One would have thought that the kusasis would at least give a little respect to the literate among them who know too well that there is absolutely no supreme court ruling that brings finality to the bawku chieftaincy dispute. We understand their desperation as it is gradually dawning on them that truth, no matter how long it is buried, will stand.
We know that Kusasis have always stood for splitting the Bawku baby in two thus the war mongering and threats to violence at the least opportunity. We remain resolute in the face of their brazen provocation and will do everything legally possible to ensure the Bawku baby remains intact.
We conclude by appealing to the good people of Bawku to continue to exercise restraint even as we are being provoked. Let us continue to be law abiding, live peacefully with each other and let the police do their work.
