TO MINORITY LEADER AS A TRUE DESCENDANT OF NAA GBEWAA.

INDEED YOU TRULY DESCENDANT OF NAA GBEWAA AND THAT WHY YOU CAN'T SLEEP AND VERY WORRIED ABOUT BAWKU.

WE FIRST OF ALL THANK YOU FOR THE VISIT MADE AND THE ABILITY TO TELL PARLIAMENT THE EXPERIENCE YOU HAD DURING YOUR VISIT, INDEED WE CLEARLY SEE SIGNS OF FUTURE PRESIDENT BUT HON. PLEASE USE ONE SECOND OF YOUR TIME TO READ THE PRESS RELEASE OF CONCERNS MAMPRUGU YOUTH ASSOCIATION - BAWKU.

 MAMPRUGU YOUTH ASSOCIATION - BAWKU CHAPTER

03/03/2022

The Mamprugu Youth Association wishes to commend the minority leader Hon. Haruna Iddrisu for his statement on March 2, 2022, on the floor of Parliament regarding the deteriorating security situation in Bawku. His concerns are very timely, particularly following the heinous killing of a Moshie man by the name Salley Seidu on Sunday 27th February 2022 by Kusasi criminals at their enclave simply because the deceased lives in the Bawku township which is dominated by Mamprusis.

This recent murder which was done with the highest level of impunity by the Kusasi bandits is a serious indictment on the Government and security apparatus. This is because the murder of the man occurred on the busy Bawku-Bolga highway and less than  100 meters away from the heavily armed guarded prison service area. This same location in which the heinous crime was committed is less than 100 meters from some bungalows of the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) formally the BNI and at the same time within the vicinity of some bungalows occupied by some military personnel deployed to keep the peace. It mimics a similar mob attack on a Mamprusi elder by the name Teacher Rokes in broad daylight less than 100 meters from the Bawku Police Station after he was returning from a Peace Council meeting which led to his death. Teacker Rokes lost his life in that attack and even though his passing happened more than 10 years ago, these renewed attacks and tactics by these criminal kusasi bunch proves a long-term strategy they have deployed to continue perpetuating crime, inciting conflict and instability in Bawku. This is all in the name of holding on to the usurpation of the Bawku Skin.

As we write, news of the recent murder has been suppressed from being published or reported on the media by key political actors like the Regional Minister Stephen Yakubu who is the Chairman of the Regional Security Council. Furthermore, there is no clear information as to the action taken by the security personnel to bring the bandits to book and also assure people of safety.

We also wish to express our heavy disappointment in the hypocritical comments made by the Minister for Interior, Hon Ambrose Derry on the floor of Parliament in response to the observations made by Hon Haruna Iddrisu. This is because;

1. Since the start of the recent conflict in Bawku from December 2021, the Minister for Interior Ambrose Derry has NOT deemed it fit to personally visit Bawku to assess the security situation for himself at first hand. On the contrary, he has sat in Accra with indifference, and instead of making reconciliatory statements, he with great disdain took sides in the conflict referring to a whole faction (Mamprusis) as “criminals”. He further made inaccurate statements and several misrepresentations about the real issues like his infamous “Supreme Court ruling”. It is his biased pronouncements and that of other Government officials against the Mamprusis that have emboldened the banditry perpetrated by the Kusasi youth.

2. Ambrose Derry as Minister for Interior has refused to advise Government on the danger associated with the continuous stay in office of the Regional Minister Stephen Yakubu. The Regional Minister who acts as the Chairman of the Regional Security Council belongs to the Kusasi faction and has demonstrated his bias against the Mamprusis as far as recent events are concerned. However, all calls to Government to at least reassign him somewhere have proven futile. Even until recently when we saw a purported memo about transfers of Coordinating directors, calls for the reassigning of the Regional Coordinating Director who is a Self-Proclaimed Kusasi and who openly meddled in the conflict fell on deaf ears. These are the people responsible for the heightened insecurity situation since their tribesmen (Kusasis) feel they will go free irrespective of the crime they commit. Instead, the interior minister in response to Hon. Haruna Iddrisu mentioned that “we are prepared to make sure that the status quo is maintained". We shudder to ask; where is the NPP Government of President Kufour in which Hon. Malik Alhassan Yakubu honorably resigned as Interior Minister simply because he was a member of one faction during the Dagbon crisis? Why can't the Government reassign Stephen Yakubu who is a member of one faction and at the same time Chairman of the Security Council?

3. If this is how internal security matters of this country are being handled by the likes of Ambrose Derry as interior Ministers, then the safety of Ghanaians is not guaranteed.

We wish to draw the attention of Ghanaians and the Government that people within the Bawku township consisting of Mamprusis and other tribes will be forced to use any legal means necessary to protect themselves if Government consistently fails to protect them from the criminal actions of the Kusasi youth.

Finally, we wish to advise the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Hon. Mahama Ayariga to take lessons from the leadership qualities displayed by Hon. Haruna Iddrisu on this matter. Hon. Ayariga should know that he blew away a golden opportunity to be an impartial arbiter and agent of peace when he, instead of acting as neutral, wore his Kusasi cloak to do advocacy for his tribesmen on National TV,  National radio, and through his press release. He should be ashamed and know that the blood of the innocent souls murdered by the bandits emboldened by his shameful actions are on his hands.
