Today's Wednesday 9th March, 2022, the King of the Mamprugu kingdom HRM the Nayiri, Naa Bohagu Abdulai Mahami Sheriga have enstooled Nba Abdulai Seidu as the NBA ADU of the Mamprugu kingdom.
The NBA ADU tittle is a Warrior Chieftaincy tittle in the Mamprugu kingdom and per the customs and traditions of Mamprugu, Warrior Chiefs sits on a Stool. It's only Warriors that are enstooled, all other Chiefs are enskined and sits on skins. The ADU tittle is a preserve for the ADU clan in Nalerigu, traditional capital of the Mamprugu kingdom.
The first ADU was Adu Seidu (Naa GbΙwaa PΙ'a biiya, Bun sunΕ din yΙΙli daa ku kΙnΕ daara), his mother was a Princess by name Nma Sheitu, daughter of the 22nd Nayiri, Naa Sigri Sulemana (1902-1905).
After Adu Seidu, his son Adu Wuni succeeded him, Adu Gumah succeeded Adu Wuni and now Adu Gumah is being succeeded by Adu Abdulai.
The ADU was originally part of the Nayiri Council of elders. In the 1932 Conference of Mamprugu Chiefs, the Mamprugu kingdom Constitution was drawn with an eleven (11) member Nayiri Council constituted as; 1. Nba Taraana 2. Sakpari 3. Nba Sakpa-Naaba 4. Nba Akara 5. Nba Kpati-Raana 6. Nba Kpana-Raana (Maasu) 7. Nba Wunangi 8. Nba Adu 9. Nba Daasu 10. Nba Akyiri 11. Nba Asuma.
The ADU, ASUMA, AKYIRI and DAASU are all Warriors and they performed the duties as "Palace Guards" entrusted with the responsibility of providing personal security to the King (the Nayiri). The houses of all this Warrior Chiefs were situated behind the Ancient Nayiri Palace and even till date, the architectural design hasn't changed and the "family houses" of Adu, Asuma, Daasu and Akyiri are behind the Ancient Nayiri Palace. The reason for this architecture was that, no enemy can attack the Nayiri Palace from behind because the houses of this Warriors are spaced around the Palace. Aside the Palace security, they also goes to war with the Nayiri either in conquest or defence of the kingdom.
The ADU is a Warrior Chief also known as Kanbon-Naaba/Sapashini. He sits on a Stool (Kukka), uses a Metal Staff (Gaaji) as a walking stick and a 'Baranzum' which he always holds on his hand or placed on his shoulder.
